Travel Vaccine FAQs
Do I need to be vaccinated to travel to the USA?
Yes, you should be updated on all routine vaccinations and this depends on your age and medical conditions. This can be assessed by your pharmacist prior to your trip!
Are travel vaccines mandatory?
In some cases, vaccines can be mandatory depending on your travel itinerary. When vaccines are not mandatory they may still be strongly recommended to protect your health when travelling to risk areas.
How long do travel vaccines last?
How long a vaccine lasts depends on the specific vaccine as it varies with each individual one.
Can pharmacists give vaccines in Canada? Why should I visit a travel clinic instead of my family doctor for a travel consultation?
Travel health is a specialized training that doctors, nurses and pharmacists can study and write an exam for. Most family doctors do not have this specialized training. Mint has pharmacists that are certified through the ISTM [International Society of Travel Medicine] This certification ensures that nothing is missed and that the information and vaccinations you receive are based on the most up to date recommendations for your travel itinerary.
What is a travel vaccine? Why do I need a consultation? When are the vaccinations done?
A consult is beneficial for many reasons. A consult thoroughly addresses vaccine needs, medication needs and non-drug measures which include, but not limited to, food/water precautions and insect precautions. The cost of the consultation is based on your itinerary. If you have a consult there is no additional injection fees even for boosters needed in the future. (Without a consult, injection fees are $15-$20 per injection so you actually save money with a consult (most of the time) and ensure you get all the information you need to ensure you have a safe trip.)
Vaccinations are typically done after the consultation within the same appointment. But follow up appointments may be needed to complete the vaccine series depending on the vaccines administered.
